Welcome! Spike is a free educational companion for kids with Type 1 Diabetes and their families. Using Spike means you agree to these terms — written in plain language on purpose, because families should be able to actually read them.
The most important term: Spike is not medical advice.
Spike is an educational tool. It does not diagnose, treat, dose, or alarm. Carb estimates are estimates. Nothing in Spike replaces the judgment of your doctor, diabetes educator, or care team — for every medical decision, including insulin dosing, follow their guidance and your prescribed care plan. If someone is having a medical emergency, call your local emergency number now.
Who can use Spike
Spike is designed for children ages 6–16 with the knowledge and involvement of a parent or guardian, and for the adults who care for them. If you're under 13, a parent or guardian should know you're using Spike, and features that collect any information (like the email list) ask for their OK first.
The free service
Spike's core — chat, learning content, community, badges, and a daily allowance of Carb Cam scans — is free. Daily fair-use limits keep it free for everyone; when you reach one, Spike says so kindly and the counter resets the next day. We may change or discontinue features, but the free core above is a standing promise.
Community rules
- Be kind. This is a space for kids and families living with the same disease.
- Never share personal details — yours or anyone's: no real full names, addresses, schools, phone numbers, or anything that identifies a person.
- No medical advice: share experiences ("what worked for us"), not instructions ("you should take…").
- No spam, advertising, harassment, or content that doesn't belong in a space with children.
Posts are public. We may remove content or restrict nicknames that break these rules, at our discretion, to keep the space safe.
Accuracy & availability
Spike uses artificial intelligence, and AI makes mistakes — including carb estimates that are off and answers that are imperfect. Spike is provided "as is," without warranties of any kind, and we can't promise uninterrupted availability. To the fullest extent permitted by law, Spike's operator is not liable for damages arising from use of the service; in places that don't allow that limitation, liability is limited to the greatest extent the law allows. Never rely on Spike where a mistake could harm someone — that's what your care team is for.
Your content
You own what you post. By posting in the community you give us permission to display it in the app. Photos you send to Carb Cam are analyzed and not stored — see the Privacy Policy for the full data story.
Changes to these terms
If these terms change meaningfully, we'll update this page and its date and note the change in the app. Continuing to use Spike after a change means you accept it.
